Study Finds, Vitamin D Reduces Inflammation and Pain In MS Patients

Overview:

  • Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a condition that causes a person’s immune system to attack the myelin sheath (protective covering) that shields nerve fibers.
  • Although this disease is classified as a nervous system disorder, it can be considered an inflammatory pain condition as well, especially since it produces symptoms of tingling or burning pain, muscle cramping, and more.
  • There is no cure for MS, but there are ways patients can minimize symptoms. In this blog, the pain management specialists discuss a study that found vitamin D can reduce pain and inflammation in patients with MS.

Depending on the condition’s severity level, MS can produce many different symptoms such as pain, fatigue, reduced coordination, and impaired cognitive abilities. As a result, interventional pain care, among other therapies, may be considered to effectively reduce pain and discomfort. Currently, treatment for MS includes:

  • Prescription medication
  • Lifestyle changes through diet and exercise
  • Behavioral health
  • Pain management

If you’re suffering from MS, you may get frustrated from time to time when pain and other symptoms strike. Fortunately, there are various remedies being tested to mitigate your body’s hyperactive immune response. According to the medical journal Neurology and the Pain News Network, a study conducted by Johns Hopkins physicians found vitamin D supplements can help reduce inflammation in patients with MS and other chronic inflammatory pain conditions.

Previous studies have found low levels of vitamin D in blood can increase the risk of developing MS, and cause greater disability in those who are already afflicted by the condition. The John Hopkins study looked into the effects of vitamin D by delivering 10,400 international units (IU) or 800 IU of the supplement to 40 people every day for six months. Participants who received the higher dosage had a reduction in inflammatory T cells.

Interestingly enough, a similar study found a correlation between fibromyalgia and low levels of vitamin D, which has led many scientists and physicians to believe vitamin D can also help combat pain symptoms. Although additional tests will be needed before a definitive answer can be made, there generally is no harm in boosting your vitamin D intake.
