Can Vitamins Promote Nerve Health?

Nerves are responsible for carrying information from the body to the brain, so it’s no wonder that nerves are involved in chronic pain conditions. When nerves are pinched, damaged, or misfire pain signals, Tulsa Pain can address this by using nerve blocks, steroid injections, or a number of other treatments. But what if it were possible to promote nerve health from home? After all, we do take vitamins to prevent sickness and help us feel better.

Our physicians say that taking vitamins will not restore your nerves to full health, but that there has been evidence that certain vitamins improve the body’s overall function. While our pain experts agree that you probably shouldn’t try to treat your nerve pain with vitamins, they may be able to help manage your symptoms.

Deficiency in Vitamin B12, among other B-complex vitamins, is suspected to be a contributing cause of nerve conditions like neuropathy. This vitamin deficiency may be common among vegetarians and vegans, as it is mainly found in red meats, dairy, fish, and poultry. According to a study, introducing vitamin B12 therapy may not reverse the effect of neuropathy, but the progression of the condition may be stopped.

Magnesium is another dietary supplement that may be beneficial to chronic pain patients. Magnesium may have an anti-inflammatory effect on the body, so if something is compressing the nerve causing it to send pain signals to the brain, an anti-inflammatory effect may help with symptoms.

While Vitamin B12 and magnesium are just a few examples of dietary supplements that may help alleviate the symptoms of nerve damage, there are a number of other vitamins and minerals that researchers are investigating. Since they play a role in so many aspects of our bodies, it can be difficult to evaluate the exact effect on the nerves. For this reason, our physicians recommend only using vitamins as a supporting measure to your current treatment plan from Tulsa Pain. Talk to your physician about vitamins he or she may recommend. Your doctor may also be able to give you valuable information about diet recommendations for foods that improve your symptoms.
