Facet Joint Syndrome

Definition

Facet joints allow the spine to move and be flexible, all while maintaining stability. These joints have an important job, but when surrounding cartilage deteriorates, facet joints can cause chronic pain. Facet joint syndrome occurs after the cartilage coating the facet joints break down and become damaged. The bones rub against each other with no cushion, which can cause a lot of pain and inflammation in the spine. Sometimes, facet joint syndrome goes undiagnosed because it can be difficult to pinpoint the exact cause of the patient's back pain. However, Tulsa Pain is equipped to diagnose and treat facet joint syndrome using joint blocks and other diagnostic tools.

Causes

Many times, people develop facet joint syndrome from old age. As we age, it’s natural for our intervertebral discs to degenerate over time, which may lead to facet joint syndrome. However, people can develop facet joint syndrome after a spinal injury or from everyday wear and tear as well.

Symptoms

Because facet joint syndrome can occur in all regions of the spine, the location of the pain depends on the location of the damaged joint. Patients with facet joint syndrome in their cervical spine may have a hard time moving their neck, resulting in headaches and upper back pain. If the pain is in the lumbar spine, patients may have difficulty walking and could feel pain in the lower back, buttocks, and legs.

Treatments

When patients are first diagnosed with facet joint syndrome, they may be advised to limit the use of their spine. Meaning, rest, ice, and anti-inflammatory medication may be recommended to control pain. Patients may also be referred to a physical therapist to regain strength and mobility while practicing pain relief techniques. If the patient continues to feel pain, a Tulsa Pain physician may administer a facet joint block. This injection can provide patients with pain relief for several months. In some cases, patients who were in too much pain to begin physical therapy before may be able to start with the help of a facet joint block. If necessary, these injections may be repeated.
