Yoga May Ease Arthritis Pain and Boost Mood

Overview:

  • Arthritis is a degenerative condition that causes inflammation in the joints, resulting in pain and stiffness.
  • The last thing most patients with arthritis want to do is exercise, but according to Cleveland Clinic, gentle yoga may ease arthritis pain while improving a patient’s overall mood.
  • The pain management specialists at Tulsa Pain value a multidisciplinary approach to treatment, which is why they may recommend alternative therapies with their interventional treatment options, like gentle yoga.

New research from Cleveland Clinic found a well-designed, gentle yoga program may help arthritis patients reduce their pain symptoms and boost their overall mood! In the study, patients with knee osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis participated in two yoga classes once a week for eight weeks at home.

When the results from the yoga group were compared to the control group, researchers found the yoga practitioners experienced less pain, increased physical functioning, and an overall improved mood. An interesting component of the study found the yoga group still reported improved symptoms nine months after the study.

Although the study discussed the benefits of yoga specifically, patients should understand there are many health benefits that can be gained from alternative, gentle exercise programs. As we mentioned previously, arthritis patients may be apprehensive when beginning an exercise program in fear of the pain it may cause their joints. At first, a mild pain may be felt during the warm-up, but over time, the joints will become lubricated from the boost of blood flow.

Whether you’re interested in starting a cardiovascular exercise regimen or a strength-training program, it’s important you get it cleared by your Tulsa Pain physician. Moreover, if you’re a beginner when it comes to exercising, make sure you talk to a credentialed physical therapist or trainer about the best exercises for your condition.
