Caudal Epidural Steroid Injection for Lower Back, Rectal, or Groin Pain

Caudal Epidural Steroid Injection for Lower Back, Rectal, or Groin Pain

A caudal epidural steroid injection is a minimally invasive procedure that is similar to other injection therapies, but is administered through an opening in the sacrum. The injection contains a steroid medication and anesthetic to simultaneously reduce inflammation and alleviate pain symptoms. Below is what patients can expect before, during and after a caudal epidural steroid injection for chronic low back, rectal or groin pain.

Before

Prior to scheduling your caudal epidural steroid injection, patients typically receive either a thorough physical examination by their Tulsa Pain physician, or will be talked to about the potential risks and complications that come with the treatment option. Once you’ve been determined a candidate for the procedure and cleared for treatment, your Tulsa Pain physician will discuss what to expect during and after the procedure.

During

During the procedure, the patient lies face down and is administered an anesthetic to numb the skin and tissue directly above the base of the sacrum. Once the area is numb, the physician will guide a needle through the sacrum opening called the sacral hiatus to inject a contrast solution. Once this this contrast dye has been injected, the physician will then use a fluoroscope to ensure treatment is being delivered to the correct area. As soon as the physicians are in the correct area and the needle is in position, the medication will be injected and the patient should experience subsequent pain relief. Multiple injections may be required to deliver the best result.

After

Once the procedure is complete, patients may experience long-lasting pain relief. Soreness may be present a few days after the procedure. If the soreness continues or develops into swelling, bleeding or an infection, call your Tulsa Pain specialist right away.
